Introduction:

In KS2 maths builds heavily on prior knowledge and continues to broaden pupils understanding of number and place value to those beyond whole numbers. The are taught to become more proficient in calculations, using different methods for all four operations. By Year 4, all pupils are expected to recall their times tables up to 12×12 and read, write and convert time between analogue and digital 12 and 24 hour clocks. By Year 5, pupils are introduced to the language of algebra and by the end of Year 6 it is expected that pupils should be fluent in written methods for all four operations, including long multiplication and division and in working with fractions, decimals and percentages.

Tasks you could try at home:

Accurate and quick recall of times tables facts is important for mathematicians in Key Stage 2 – building confidence in maths and supporting a wide range of other areas. In years 4, 5, and 6, children have access to Times Tables Rock Stars which is a fun and engaging way to learn their times tables. Daily use of TT Rock Stars at home is a great way to improve your child’s speed of recall.

Maths is all around us and you can have great fun with it – including playing board games such as Snakes and Ladders, Monopoly and Shut the Box. When playing these types of games children become comfortable with the number system and spotting patterns. Please get in touch if you can recommend any other maths-based games children can play.

Children could also practise applying their maths knowledge at home with you for example, telling the time, working out how long a journey has been, using a stop watch, measuring ingredients for baking, estimating change when you are shopping.
