PSHE
At Kader Academy, the physical and emotional wellbeing of our children is a priority. We value and nurture every child as an individual; as someone whose uniqueness, interests and passions are supported and celebrated. We are a family who learn together, care for one another and make the most of every opportunity.
Aims
At Kader Academy, our PSHE and RSE curriculum aims to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead safe, healthy and fulfilling lives. Rooted in our KADER values(Kindness, Ambition, Determination, Excellence and Respect) we support children to develop strong moral foundations, positive relationships and a clear sense of who they are.
We strive to develop pupils’ ambition and self-belief, ensuring that they understand their potential and recognise that, through effort and determination, they can achieve great things. Alongside this, we place a strong emphasis on building resilience, equipping children with the emotional skills needed to navigate challenges and respond positively to difficult experiences. Through our curriculum, pupils develop a strong sense of identity, learning to value themselves and others; build positive relationships, understanding respect, empathy and communication and become active, responsible members of their local community and wider society.
We ensure that pupils are taught how to make informed choices that support their physical health, mental health and overall wellbeing, developing an awareness of factors that may impact their emotional wellbeing in an age-appropriate way. Pupils learn how to keep themselves safe, both online and offline, and are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life in modern Britain. Our curriculum promotes the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance, ensuring that pupils develop as respectful, responsible and active citizens within their community and beyond.
Approach
Our PSHE and RSE curriculum is carefully sequenced and delivered through a structured programme that builds knowledge and skills progressively from the Early Years to Year 6, in line with statutory guidance. We use the Jigsaw PSHE scheme to provide a cohesive, spiral curriculum that develops pupils’ emotional literacy, mental health awareness and understanding of relationships over time.
This is further strengthened through our work with the Middlesbrough Police Education Programme and a range of external partners, ensuring pupils benefit from meaningful, real-life learning around safety, decision-making, wellbeing and their role within the community.
Learning is inclusive and adapted to meet the needs of all pupils, ensuring that every child feels safe, supported and able to participate. Lessons provide regular opportunities for discussion, reflection and oracy, enabling pupils to express their thoughts, explore different viewpoints and build confidence in communicating their ideas.
Key themes such as health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world are revisited and built upon over time, ensuring knowledge is embedded and connected. Pupils are supported to make links between their learning and real-life experiences, strengthening their understanding of how to apply their knowledge in meaningful contexts.
Sensitive content is delivered in an age-appropriate way, underpinned by a strong safeguarding culture and a commitment to promoting respect, tolerance and inclusion. The curriculum is further enriched through assemblies, themed events, visitors and wider opportunities, enabling pupils to see the relevance of their learning beyond the classroom and within their local community.
Outcomes
At Kader Academy, all pupils, including those with additional needs, leave with the knowledge and skills required by the statutory RSHE curriculum, alongside the confidence to apply this learning in their everyday lives. They demonstrate a clear understanding of how to keep themselves safe, both online and offline, make informed choices about their physical and mental health, and build and maintain positive, respectful relationships.
Pupils develop a strong sense of self-worth, alongside kindness, respect and compassion for others. They show a willingness to try new things, set high aspirations for themselves and persevere when faced with challenge, demonstrating resilience and a positive attitude to both learning and life.
Through exposure to a range of global issues, pupils develop tolerance, empathy and a strong sense of responsibility as global citizens. They understand what it means to be part of a diverse and multicultural society and actively demonstrate respect for others within the school and wider community.
Pupils are able to recognise, understand and manage their emotions effectively. They know how to look after their mental health and wellbeing and feel confident in seeking support when needed, demonstrating increasing independence and emotional maturity.
Across the school, pupils demonstrate a strong sense of identity, feeling confident in who they are; build positive relationships, interacting respectfully and collaboratively with others; and show ambition, striving to achieve their goals and make a meaningful contribution to their community and wider society.
Formative assessment is embedded within each PSHE lesson, with pupils given regular opportunities to reflect on and evaluate their own learning. Progress is recognised and celebrated through classroom practice and weekly celebration assemblies. The impact of the PSHE and RSE curriculum is rigorously monitored by subject leaders through pupil voice, book monitoring and professional dialogue with staff, ensuring that the curriculum continues to meet the needs of all learners.
As a result, pupils leave Kader as confident, respectful and responsible individuals who are fully prepared for the next stage of their education and equipped to navigate the opportunities and challenges of life in modern Britain.
