Intent: Why our French curriculum looks like this

At Kader Academy, we are incredibly proud of our children’s heritage and the diverse range of languages spoken within our communityIt is our intent to provide all Key Stage 2 pupils with a high-quality education in French, which will inspire their love of languages and other cultures. In addition, the acquisition of spoken and written French will provide students with a firm foundation to learn further languagesAt the end of Key Stage 2, Kader pupils will be able to confidently converse and write at varying lengths in French.

Implementation: How we will achieve this

Kader Academy’s French curriculum is designed to ignite and fuel our children’s passion for learning languages. Lessons are delivered in a stimulating learning environment and incorporate a range of learning styles to ensure maximum impact. The use of active participation in rhymes, songs, stories, dictionary work, drama, grammar work and D.A.R.T. activities allow written and oral language skills to be firmly embedded.

Weekly lessons are taught by our language specialist, with class teachers reinforcing the learning which has taken place.  Our school follows the Kapow scheme of work, which is adapted to meet the learning needs of our children.   We are also in the early stages of ‘pen-pal’ communication with a school in Orange (Provence).

Impact: The approach at Kader will ensure that

In line with National Curriculum objectives, Kader Academy’s French curriculum will empower students to:

  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

The progression of children’s oral and written skills will be evident in:

  • Acquisition of key vocabulary (video footage and key skill assessments)
  • Written evidence in books
  • Pupil voice interviews
