PSHE Including RSE

Curriculum Lead : Mrs R. Stockwell

This school year, we have been implementing the PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) Programme across our school called Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE.

The lessons since September, have built upon children’s emotional literacy, self-esteem and knowledge of who they are and how they relate to each other and the world in a positive and healthy way. We are sure you will have already heard about the Jigsaw Friends and Calm Me time from your children.

The new PSHE scheme of work is a scheme which is taught throughout the year from Nursery – Y6, and incorporates the statutory DfE guidance on Relationship Education, Relationship and Sex Education (SRE) and Health Education. It also includes the statutory teaching of the Equality Act 2010.

What is Relationships and Sex Education?

The government has now made Relationships Education and Health Education statutory for all primary schools from Summer 2021.

The Government’s definition is:

“It is a lifelong learning about physical, moral and emotional development. It is about the understanding of the importance of marriage for family life, stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care. It is also about the teaching of sex, sexuality and sexual health. It is not about the promotion of sexual activity.” (Department for Education and Employment, SRE guidance, 2000).

Please be aware that as a school, we have already made the decision not to teach the sex education part of the guidance (non- statutory). We do not feel that this is appropriate for our school community. This part of the guidance will be taught when your child attends secondary school.

What will my child be taught in their RSHE lessons?

We would like the opportunity to share the new statutory requirements with you, so you are clear about the curriculum we intend to teach your child. As always, we want to work in partnership with our parents and carers and value your thoughts, feelings and ideas to help support us in the delivery of our PSHE programme.

Your child will be taught content on the following areas:

  • Families and people who care for me
  • Caring friendships
  • Respectful relationships
  • Online relationships
  • Being safe
  • Mental wellbeing
  • Internet safety and harms
  • Physical health and fitness
  • Healthy eating
  • Drugs, alcohol and tobacco
  • Health and prevention
  • Basic first aid
  • The changing adolescent body

We hope you, like us, will see the materials in Jigsaw as educationally sound and beneficial to our children, helping to safeguard them.

When will the unit ‘The Changing Adolescent body’ be taught?

In Year 5 and 6, your child will take part in a series of lessons which will help them to understand the changes puberty brings. There is a very serious safeguarding aspect to this work and obviously the younger year groups are not looking at these issues directly and explicitly. This unit of work (Changing Me) is undertaken in the Summer term.

We hope you will agree with us that this work is vitally important for children, that it needs to be done age-appropriately and that the Jigsaw Programme gives us a secure framework in which to do this.

Can I remove my child from their RSHE lessons?

As our Scheme of work only covers the statutory guidance set out for Relationship Education by the DfE, parents do not have the right to withdraw their child/ren from any of the Jigsaw lessons. If you require further clarification/guidance, please contact Mrs Donald and Mrs Stockwell.

Further resources and additional information

We have added appropriate links on our website, so you can access a range of materials at your leisure and to further your understanding about the new guidance. We have also added a short questionnaire too as part of our consultation process. Please do not hesitate in getting in touch for further clarification or any further questions you may have.

Intent : Why Our PSHE Curriculum looks like this

For pupils to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and to realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it.

To build children’s level of resilience so that they have the emotional skills to work through and tackle difficult life events head-on.

To provide pupils with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to enable them to play an active role in their local community and society.

To educate pupils on how to make simple choices to improve their health and wellbeing.

For children to be aware of factors (at an appropriate level) which could affect their mental health and wellbeing.

Implementation : How We Achieve This:

Pupils are taught PSHE using ‘Jigsaw’ which is a spiral, progressive scheme of work which helps prepare children for life, helping them to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world. There is a strong emphasis on emotional Literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. It includes mindfulness to allow children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (Puzzles), each containing six lessons (Pieces).

  • Term 1: Being Me in My World
  • Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)
  • Term 3: Dreams and Goals
  • Term 4: Healthy Me
  • Term 5: Relationships
  • Term 6: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

At Kader Academy, we allocate one lesson (approx. 45mins to 1 hour) to PSHE each week in order to teach the PSHE knowledge and skills in a developmental and age-appropriate way.

Visitors, such as emergency services and the school nurse, complement our PSHE curriculum to offer additional learning.

Impact: The approach at Kader Will Ensure that:

For all children to have the willingness to try new things, to set high aspirations for themselves and to persevere when faced with challenge.

For pupils to have a strong sense of self-worth, kindness, respect and compassion for others.

From exposure to a range of global issues and problems, children will build up tolerance and a sense of responsibility to being a global citizen.

To have an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse and multicultural society.

Children will have acquired a good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and how to develop good relationships with their peers.

For pupils to be able to recognise, understand and manage their own emotions. To look after their own mental health and to ask for and seek support where necessary

Formative assessments are included within each PSHE lesson. The children will be given the opportunity to self-assess and to identify areas for self-improvement. An individual’s progress will be recognised through recognition within the classroom and being awarded certificates during weekly celebration assemblies.

To assess the impact of Kader Academy’s PSHE and RSE curriculum, the PSHE lead will monitor the subject through discussions with pupils, book monitoring, gathering evidence of children’s work and informative discussions with colleagues.
