Welcome to Year 5!

Meet the staff

Year 5 is an exciting and pivotal year at Kader Academy, where pupils grow in independence, deepen their understanding and begin to see themselves as active members of their community. Our move ‘up the stairs’ means we are growing up! This is our penultimate primary school year and we intend to make the most of every minute of it!

Rooted in our Kader values of Kindness, Ambition, Determination, Excellence and Respect, and driven by Relationships, Identity and Ambition, we create a culture where every child feels part of One Family, develops a strong sense of self and is inspired to achieve their very best.

The Year 5 curriculum is ambitious and carefully sequenced, building on prior learning while preparing pupils for Year 6. Through a strong emphasis on oracy, critical thinking and independence, pupils develop the confidence to articulate ideas, make connections and approach challenges with resilience.

A key highlight is our local unit, ‘Me, My Community, My Middlesbrough’, where pupils explore identity, migration and belonging. Through meaningful links with the local community, pupils develop pride in where they live and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Beyond the classroom, a range of enriching experiences further build confidence, strengthen relationships and broaden horizons.

By the end of Year 5, pupils are confident, reflective and aspirational learners, ready for the responsibilities of Year 6 and excited for what lies ahead- living our vision of:

One Family. Little People. Big Dreams.

Personal Development and Wellbeing

In Year 5, we recognise that pupils continue to grow not only academically, but also personally and emotionally. As children become more independent, they begin to develop a deeper understanding of themselves, their relationships and their place within the world around them.

Through our carefully planned PSHE and RSE curriculum, pupils are taught about wellbeing, healthy relationships and personal development in an age-appropriate, respectful and inclusive way. We create a safe and supportive environment where children feel confident to share their thoughts, ask questions and develop strategies to look after their physical and mental health.

Wellbeing is a daily priority. Pupils are supported to recognise and manage their emotions, build resilience and develop positive coping strategies. Through open discussions, strong relationships with trusted adults and our sense of One Family, children know they are valued, listened to and supported.

We place a strong emphasis on confidence, identity and self-worth. Pupils are encouraged to celebrate who they are, respect others and develop a growing sense of responsibility as members of both the school and wider community.

Through a rich range of experiences and a nurturing school culture, our Year 5 pupils grow into confident, respectful and emotionally aware individuals, well prepared for the challenges and opportunities of Year 6 and beyond.

Transition

Year 5 marks the beginning of Upper Key Stage 2, bringing with it a shift in expectations and a growing focus on independence. Pupils are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their learning, organisation and behaviour, developing the confidence and resilience needed as they move closer to the end of their primary journey.

This transition is closely supported through our PSHE curriculum, where pupils develop skills in independence, responsibility, organisation and self-awareness. Alongside this, pupils begin to take on leadership roles and responsibilities, such as play leaders and librarians, allowing them to contribute positively to the school community while building confidence and a sense of pride.

Throughout the year, we support pupils to become more independent learners who are able to manage their time, reflect on their progress and approach challenges with increasing maturity. This strong foundation ensures they are well prepared for the demands and opportunities of Year 6.

Year 5 is also an important time to begin looking ahead to secondary school. Families will start to receive information about secondary open evenings and visits, providing a valuable opportunity to explore different schools, ask questions and begin to consider future pathways.

We encourage pupils and families to start planting the seeds for transition, using this time to build confidence, develop independence and begin thinking about the next stage. By the time pupils reach Year 6, they will already feel more prepared, informed and excited about what lies ahead.
